Payment Guidance for Overseas Visitors to Shanghai

There are various payment methods to choose from, including card payments, mobile payments, cash payments, etc...

Follow this guidance to explore Shanghai together!

1 Overseas Band Card Payments

Present your overseas card to the staff for payment where you can see logos of your card schemes such as VISA, MasterCard, JCB...
If you have UnionPay, you can use it at all merchants with POS terminals in China.
If in doubt, ask the staff for more information.

2 Mobile Payments (Alipay & Weixin Pay)

(1) Alipay

Step 1: Download and install Alipay from app store

Step 2: Register with your phone number

Step 3: Add a bank card

(Support: VISA / DISCOVER / MasterCard / Diners Club International / JCB... )

Step 4: Ready for payment

Method 1: Click “Scan”, then scan merchant's QR code

Method 2: Click “Pay/Collect”, then present the merchant your QR code

(2) Weixin Pay

Step 1: Download and install WeChat from app store

Step 2: Register with your phone number

Step 3: Find the Weixin Pay (3 Methods)

(Tap Me - Services - Wallet)

(Tap Me - Settings - General - Tools - Weixin Pay - Tap Enable)

(Chats - Upper right “⊕” - Money - Tap Enable)

Step 4: Add a bank card

(Support: VISA / DISCOVER / MasterCard / Diners Club / JCB / American Express... )

Step 5: Ready for payment

Method 1: Tag the upper right “⊕”, click “Scan”, and then scan merchant's QR code

Method 2: Tag the upper right “⊕”, click “Money”, and then present the merchant your QR code

3 Cash Payments

(1) Bank Branch

Bank branches with “Exchange" signs shown can provide you with currency exchange. A valid ID is often required.

(2) Self-Service Machine

The majority of ATM machines at banks can handle withdraw Chinese yuan in cash using overseas cards, such as VISA / MasterCard / JCB / DISCOVER...

Step 1: Input the bank card password

Step 2: Press the button to choose the language

Step 3: Press the button of “Withdrawal”

Step 4: Input the amount

Step 5: Press the button of “confirm”

Step 6: Withdraw the cash

(3) Currency Exchange

At Shanghai’s two international airports, Pudong Airport and Hongqiao Airport, there are a total of 13 currency exchange counters. You can exchange currency from overseas into Chinese yuan.
